Innovative Roofing Types for Design-Focused Buildings Plus Some Materials You Haven’t Heard Of

Although asphalt shingles and clay tiles are some of the most common roofing materials to install on residential and commercial buildings, they don’t always create a striking or modern look on design-focused buildings. Fortunately, the roofing industry continues to evolve with the different roofing types that are available to ensure builders have more options. Here are a few of the most innovative roofing materials you likely haven’t heard of and are increasing in popularity.

Solar Shingles

More people are choosing to install solar roofs on design-focused buildings because they’re versatile and serve more than one purpose. Solar roofs allow the building to run off the solar power for reduced energy costs and also have a minimal and upscale design. Solar roofs don’t include any large or bulky panels, which complements different styles of buildings.

This type of roof uses a variety of solar roof shingles or solar tiles, which create a seamless design on the top of the building. Each shingle or panel is capable of absorbing the rays from the sun and converting them into energy to reduce the carbon footprint of the building. All of the power that is generated can be stored in a battery to use when it’s needed.

Green Roofs

Green roofs are innovative and unique because they have different types of plants and flowers on top of the building. It allows you to have a garden on the property in a unique setting that is unexpected. Green roofs are built with proper drainage and waterproofing to prevent the materials from becoming damaged as the plants are watered throughout the week. This type of roof lasts longer than other types of roofs but comes with more upkeep.

Blue Roofs

Blue roofs are an excellent option for those who want a modern roof that looks futuristic. This type of roof is unique because it has the ability to harvest rainwater, which is ideal for buildings that are located in areas where droughts are common. The roof has a runoff management system that collects all of the rainwater, which can be used at a later time. The clean lines and the industrial look of the roof create a beautiful design that won’t look outdated in the coming years.

White Roofs

If you want your design-focused building to stand out, installing a white roof is a great option if you want to make a statement. White roofs are not common, which makes them stand out amongst other buildings in the area. Their color shade prevents them from absorbing heat from the sun, which allows them to operate as a cool roof. This makes it easier to control the climate in the building and prevents heat from transferring through the roof deck during the warmest months of the year.

If the building is built in a warm climate, a white roof is ideal for installing because of its versatility. The clean and minimal design will allow the building to pop out amongst other black and dark roofs that surround it.

Slate Panels

Slate panels stand out in the roofing industry because they’re the most durable and long-lasting roofing material on the market. Slate is a natural material, which allows it to last an average of 150 years and offer a high level of protection on the building. The material creates a sleek and upscale design for residential and commercial buildings. The natural imperfections on each panel create a beautiful design that complements all styles of buildings. The heavy weight of the material also allows them to insulate the building, which can reduce your energy costs each season.

Although slate panels require reinforcements on older buildings to support the heavy weight of the material, some companies now sell lightweight slate roofs that come pre-assembled. This makes it an easier installation process and allows the material to be installed on all types of roofs at a lower cost.

Flat Roofs

Flat roofs are increasing in popularity because they have a modern design that is unexpected and hard to miss. Flat roofs are typically constructed with TPO or PVC fabrics and offer a high level of durability. Although this type of roof didn’t offer a lot of protection in the past, it’s now more advanced and lasts long-term to ensure you get the most out of your investment.

The roofing material you select for your design-focused building should complement the other materials that are on display. Thinking outside of the box and considering the climate will ensure the roof is functional and completes the overall design of the building.
